On one side, it’s the PGA Tour circuit, and on the other, it’s the newly founded LIV Golf. Many PGA Tour pros chose to switch sides upon the emergence of the breakaway league, whether it be the El Nino of the golf world, Sergio Garcia, or World No. 3 John Rahm, which has left the golf world divided into two. At a time like this, the idea of bringing all the golfers together under one roof through the creation of a new global league sounds like a perfect idea! doesn’t it?

And that’s exactly what Rory McIlroy wants as well. The Northern Irishman hopes for the unification of the golf world and even to put forth his visions and plans on how to achieve the same and once again see players teeing it off at the golf courses together.

“Yes and no,” Rory McIlroy has thought about the idea of a global Tour, but the 24-time PGA Tour winner describes it as “pie in the sky,” However, he has a little hint of how it can be planned. The league that McIlroy has come up with will move from east to west and back into the United States.

What are the countries it’ll move to? The countries that the 4-time major champ has counted in for the Global League have to have “a component of the southern hemisphere, Australia, South Africa” and then “a component of the far east, whether that be Korea, Japan, China.” The league will stop in the Middle East, in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

After playing the third round at the Genesis Invitational, McIlroy said in an interview, “I don’t think it [Global Tour] will look too dissimilar to what it is right now, but maybe the front end of the year and the back end of the year might look a little different,” and some tweaks may be required.

Will the events of McIlroy’s vision have a full field? No, McIlroy said that in order to have a global Tour, it would be better if the tournament “looked a little more like this” referring to the field at the Genesis Invitational, which is only 70–80 players. Moreover, the league will only have the top 80 players from all the leagues combined playing at international events.

The golfers may play other leagues, however, it will “sort of feeds up into that one [league].” To make it clear, the 34-year-old compared it to the “Champions League in European football.” McIlroy explained how the other leagues became a feeder Tour for the Champions League and only the best are allowed in it, the global tour in golf may follow the same path.

How many events per season? McIlroy said that in a year, 24 events will be played, including the four majors. However. the rest of the events can be divided into 10 or 12 in the United States and the remaining can be played internationally. The idea of having a global tour is far from fruition.
