Granit Xhaka wants to leave Arsenal Football Club. The Swiss international seems to have at last given up on his career in the North London as he eyes a move back to Germany. This comes in spite of the public backing that Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s new head coach, has given to him.
It has never been a jolly ride for Granit Xhaka at Arsenal. He was signed by legendary manager, Arsene Wenger, for about $39 million from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016. However, he has failed to live up to both, his price tag and the expectations of the Arsenal fanbase. Though one of the better passers, Xhaka has consistently lacked the defensive composure. Earning regular yellow cards while also giving away penalties in key moments.
Granit Xhaka has always been regarded as an important player by all the four managers he has played under. Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta have all seen him as an important player. But he has tailed to impress the Arsenal fanbase. He was instead seen as one of the culprits whenever the North London side lost a match. This already fractured relationship just broke apart in a match against Crystal Palace. When he reacted angrily after being booed by the fans as he was walking off after being substituted.
Granit Xhaka is reportedly moving to Bundesliga outfit, Hertha Berlin, who currently sits at 12th, just four points above the relegation zone. Xhaka has agreed on personal terms with the German side. With the Premier League outfit still to discuss the transfer fee with their counterparts. That’s according to his agent who was quoted while talking to Swiss magazine Blick, “Look, I will say it frankly and honestly, we are in agreement with Hertha BSC and would like to go to Berlin,
“We told Arsenal’s (head of football) Raul Sanllehi and sports director Edu as well as the new coach Mikel Arteta. Arsenal was informed about all the steps, the player and Hertha are clear. It is only (a matter of) the transfer fee for the clubs.”
It clearly seems that Granit Xhaka, who has 11 goals and 17 assists in his 150 appearances for the Gunners, is heading towards the exit door. Though what’s not clear is the reason which irked Arsenal’s ex-Captain so much. With some reports stating that the fact Mikel Arteta told him that he was free to leave if he wanted to is one of the major reasons.
