Conor McGregor takes on Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246. This is not a fight that was made out of nowhere. It’s a fight that took years to make. Back in the days when Conor was aiming to go the lightweight division and fight for the title, Cowboy was the one who confronted him in a press conference. After that, there have been times when this fight was rumored to be made, but unfortunately due to Conor’s inactivity fans never got to see this fight until now.

However, the majority of the fans are seeing Donald Cerrone as a stepping stone for the return of the Prodigy Child of UFC. But this was not the case when Cowboy called out Conor McGregor after his victory over Al Iaquinta. He was on a 3 fight win streak and putting up some impressive performances inside the octagon. But it’s understandable why the fans and the media do not see this fight as a very competitive one.

How Conor vs Cowboy Lost the Hype

Donald Cerrone took a lot of damage in his last two fights against two of the best lightweights at the moment. That apart, he had troubles in the past with opponents who had good boxing skills as Conor. He lost his fight against Darren Till who is a southpaw just like Conor. That apart he does not present the wrestling threat to Conor. which is one of the biggest weaknesses in Conor’s game. Hence Conor does seem a favorite going into the fight, but the accusations of Cerrone taking the fight to lose and help Conor bring back up his image is a tough pill to swallow for sure. Cerrone hits back at these accusations saying:

“There wouldn’t be enough money in the world for someone to pay me to take a dive. I could never look myself in the mirror if somebody paid me to take a dive. Sh*t, never happen. I’d rather fight for free than take money to f*cking lose. That’s not me. I’m going to fight my ass off like I do every time.”

Apart from the accusations on himself, Cerrone deferred from the notion that Conor is washed out after the long layoff from the sport. He believes fans are getting the best version of Conor McGregor on January 18th.

“I expect the best Conor you guys have ever seen. I really do. He has so many doubters and questions that he needs to answer. I think he’s training extra hard, he’s coming and I think he’s going to be the best Conor you have ever seen.” Cerrone continued.
