World Number two, Novak Djokovic was asked to reflect his thoughts on amalgamating the 119-year-old tournament, Davis Cup and the next recently launched ATP Cup. On the topic of unifying Davis and ATP Cup, Novak Djokovic (who is presently leading the ATP Player Council) will have a word with his other colleagues which includes the tennis gods, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and look into the further course of action to combine both the events of the tour.
“I’ll talk to Rafa and Roger to know their opinions, of course (regarding the unification of Davis and ATP Cup). We are all three of the Council, but we don’t make the decisions. People have this misconception that we three are making all the decisions for the future of tennis, which is absolutely not true,” Djokovic mentioned.
“Certainly, our opinions are listened to and considered, but as it is the structure there are the boards and other bodies that make these decisions, in particular, the leaders of these bodies,” the Serb added.
As of now, the Serbian tennis ace, Djokovic has not carried out any conversations with the other members of the Player Council and Novak has not discussed anything significant regarding the same.
“I didn’t talk to Rafa and Roger about this because the decision was made some time ago: the ITF and the Kosmos Group had decided to change the format while the ATP was developing its team competition which will start at January. So the situation was already quite clear and definite,” Novak Djokovic responded.
Djokovic perceives the ATP Cup to be a successful event. With everyone being fresh at the season’s beginning also the ATP men will be touring in Australia and preparing for the first Slam of the year.
“We will see in Australia how the ATP Cup will be. I think it will be a success anyway because many important players will already be there to prepare for the Australian Open. But I think the time has come for the top management of ATP and ITF to discuss it,” Djokovic added.
In Madrid, Spain, World Number two, Djokovic’s win over France’s Benoit Paire moved his nation, Serbia into the quarterfinals of Davis Cup 2019. On Friday, Serbia will play against Russia for a place in the semifinals of Davis Cup.
