French number 1 Gael Monfils might be one of the unluckiest players in the world when it comes to the generation he’s born in. Despite being a top talent, he has not been able to break the glass ceiling because he’s the same generation as the Big 3.

However, when it comes to his personal life, he is probably one of the luckiest. He is in a relationship with one of the best female tennis players in the world – Elina Svitolina. Together, the two make a power couple in the tennis world.

The year 2020 brings about new hopes and expectations for the two. As Monfils steps into probably the twilight of his career, Elina still has the world open in front of her. The Frenchman realizes this and he wants to help Elina achieve her goals.

Monfils first opened up on how lucky he is to find a partner who shares his passion. Both of them are devout students of the sport of tennis –

“To share the same goals, the dedication and experience is something amazing,” Monfils told the ATP Tour. “It’s a very individual, selfish sport, and most of the time we (me and Elina) are alone, but we appreciate the time we have together: at home or tournaments.”

Of course, even though they are both tennis players, it doesn’t mean they are always together. Most often, ATP and WTA have a very different trajectory of tours. Thus, they are in different countries most of the times.

However, a fun-loving Gael Monfils is more serious around Elina. This is because he is serious about her career. As he’s also more experienced, we can say that he might also play the role of a mentor –

“I hope I help her, and when we practise together we laugh. Perhaps, I’m more serious when I hit with her, as I want to help Elina to achieve her goals.”
