Rohit Sharma, India’s opener in limited-overs, has opened the innings for India in the longer format of the game against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. However, it is his century which made the headlines. During the first day of the first Test Rohit Sharma scored his maiden century as an opener after being pushed to bat at the top of the order for the very first time.

India have been trying to set their opening pair in Test for a long time. In the last couple of years, they have tried a couple of batsmen like KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Prithwi Shaw, Murli Vijay etc. However, captain Virat Kohli shared that they have thought earlier about Rohit’s change batting order but couldn’t implement it before.

In today’s game, he not only took on the pace bowlers but also the apin-attack as well. On the first delivery of the 20th over, Rohit Sharma stepped out to South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj to smash his first six of the innings. In the 25th over, he again hit another aerial shot off Dane Piedt to leave his mark on the South African bowlers.

With India scoring 91/0 in the first session, Rohit Sharma had reached the 50-run mark in the penultimate over of the first session. However, he didn’t play any rash shot which might cause a problem. He calmly waited in the middle, played his game and reached the ton in the 54th over of the innings.

On the other end, Mayank Agarwal too played well and provided a good support to Sharma, scoring 84* off 183. Rain hampers the game as India ended up scoring 202/0 in 59.1 overs before the stumps. However they are expected to do well in the series with the presence of those players who are in good form. Moreover, Ravichandran Ashwin too has been included in the playing XI. His inclusion certainly help India to restrict the opponent.
