A 2-1 win against Australia not only concluded a wonderful home season for the Indians but also ensured that India remain world no 1. At the start of the series, they just needed to win one match to ensure they keep hold of the rating on the cut-off date .This means that the team have now earned a cash reward of one million dollars by the ICC.

The official cut off date for the ICC test ranking is 1st April. The team finishing 1st on this day is declared as the the winners of the ICC test championship. The team winning the race is given the title of ICC test championship champion of the year. India have won the prestigious honour for the third time having previously done so in 2010 and 2011.  While the cash prize is only awarded at the end of the time period, the Test championship Mace in transferred whenever there is a change in ranking. India have had their hands on the maze since the whitewash of New Zealand in October. Australia were the previous  winners, having won the cash prize in 2016.

The accomplishment comes as no surprise as the Indian test side has been on a fantastic run ever since captain Virat Kohli took over the reins. Since 2015, India have only lost two matches having played 27 games and won 17 in the period.

The current accomplishment comes at the end of a gruelling home season for the Indians. The side played 13 test matches on a run against four different teams. The season saw India win every series they contested in against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia. The loss to Australia at Pune was the only blemish India had the whole season.

Virat Kohli would be confident that India can give the same teams a good run for their money overseas too. The next 2 years would be another testing period of the Men in white as away tours to South Africa, England and Australia await. India would like to make up for disappointments in the past 2 away seasons and stamp their authority on the format.
