There have been very few stars in tennis who have seen a rise and fall as quickly and as steeply as Eugenie Bouchard. Being touted as the next Maria Sharapova by late 2013 and 2014, she quickly lost the flight in her wings and would go into the depths of infamy.

Something had changed all of a sudden. Her aggressive game and marketable personality were no longer giving the returns they earlier did. Sadly, Bouchard still fails to find the momentum that she once had in 2014.

There was one event at the Wimbledon of 2016 which was emblematic of the problems she had developed. Her losses were taking a mental toll and there was nothing she could do. Let’s find out what had happened with Eugenie Bouchard at the Wimbledon of 2016.

What happened with Eugenie Bouchard at the Wimbledon of 2016?

Wimbledon was the tournament that once shot Eugenie Bouchard to the fame. In 2014, she had dominated the All England Club en route to the finals with giants like Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber falling to her.

However, the finals was a one-sided defeat for her against Petra Kvitova with a margin of 6-3, 6-0. She never really recovered from that. At Wimbledon 2016, we were seeing a hint of a revival with her pushing herself to the third round after a string of first-round finishes.

She was decimated by the nineteenth seed Dominika Cibulkova in the third round. The match was anything but kind for her. She smashed her racquet on the turf after apparently disappointing herself.

“I definitely was a bit emotional out there,’ said a dejected Bouchard. It’s frustrating to feel like you’re not playing your best tennis at Wimbledon.”

Anyone who’s played sports or understands it would cut her some slack. It’s not easy to face disappointment after staring at a resurgence in your good form. We all hope that Eugenie Bouchard becomes the undefeatable tennis player that she once used to be.
