A storm has erupted in the tennis world for a few hours. Two players who participated in the Adria Tennis event of Novak Djokovic have tested COVID-19 positive. These are players Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric. This has led to Nick Kyrgios slamming the organizers as well as the players for their apparent carelessness.
Notably, the event was already facing a lot of criticism for the alleged flouting of social distancing rules. After the announcements by the two players, the pitch of the criticism has increased exponentially. Kyrgios was the first from the tennis world to slam Djokovic and Co. after Coric‘s announcement.
“Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the ‘exhibition’ speedy recovery fellas, but that’s what happens when you disregard all protocols. This IS NOT A JOKE.”
Novak Djokovic had claimed in a Eurosports interview that all regulations were being followed in the Adria Tour. However, it seems like the players coming from outside the country, especially from the USA, were the ones infected.
The players even participated in a football match. Pictures emerged of them hugging each other and also being in huddles. Meanwhile, Borna Coric and Grigor Dimitrov have told all their contacts in the past few days to get themselves tested.
“Hi everyone. I wanted to inform you all that I tested positive for Covid-19. I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during the last few days gets tested! I’m really sorry for any harm I might have caused.
I’m feeling well and don’t have any symptoms. Please stay safe and healthy.”
This has put up a huge question mark on all future tennis events. Authorities will be more careful now in letting events get the green signal. That’s why social distancing is more important than the thought of.
