Jan-Lennard Struff Stuns Stefanos Tsitsipas at Cincinnati Open 2019

Jan-Lennard Struff upsets the world No.7, Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach the round of 16 of the Western and Southern Open 2019 on Wednesday.

With this victory, Jan-Lennard Struff takes a lead in their head-to-head to 2-1. He also won his second consecutive match against Stefanos Tsitsipas after claiming a victory in their last match in a three-setter at the Barcelona Open 2019. This is also the sixth top 10 win for Struff.

In the first set, the German took command on his service games as he did not grant a single break point opportunity for Stefanos Tsitsipas on the whole set. While he also manages to break the 21-year-old after missing the first breakpoint opportunity to claim the first set 6-4.

Tsitsipas was taking no risks and kept throwing all the balls into Struff’s hands. He certainly failed to make the German uncomfortable which cost him the first set.

Jan-Lennard Struff took the momentum in the second set as he broke the Greek in his first service game. The two held their serve strongly until 5-4 when Tsitsipas was receiving to stay in the match when he earned his first break point opportunity in the match and the Greek gun capitalized on it to stay on serve at 5-5.

The Drama continued as Tsitsipas received a warning for on-court coaching at 6-5 as he had a conversation with the chair umpire while changing ends.

The set then went on till the tiebreaker with Tsitsipas dominating the tiebreaker to make a comeback into the match at the win the set 7-6(5).

In the deciding set, both players held their serve strongly until 6-6 as the set went on to the second tiebreaker of the match. Struff ruled the tiebreaker as he won the set 7-6 (8-6).

The 29-year-old will face Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 of the Cincinnati Masters 2019. Earlier, Daniil Medvedev defeated Benoit Paire in straight sets in the round of 32.
