Jorge Masvidal Who? Dana White Confirms Conor McGregor Wants Khabib Rematch After UFC 246

UFC 246 will mark the much-anticipated return of Conor McGregor. McGregor takes on Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout. Although this move did not make a lot of sense initially since McGregor was pretty adamant about the rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov ever since his loss at UFC 229. So him fighting Cowboy at welterweight made the fans believe that he is coming after the BMF titleholder, Jorge Masvidal or his long rival, Nate Diaz.

However, UFC president, Dana White has finally revealed the reason for McGregor fighting at 170 in a recent radio interview. McGregor is looking for a quick turn around after UFC 246 and he wants the rematch with the lightweight champion.

“Conor wanted to fight at 170 and Cowboy was like, no problem. Both of them don’t want to cut to 55. I think Conor also has plans, if he beats Cowboy Cerrone he wants to turn around quick and fight again. Obviously, if he fights at 170 he won’t have to make that weight twice.” stated White.

McGregor has shown his intentions to fight Jorge Masvidal after the BMF title fight. Masvidal has also agreed to fight McGregor stating that it would be an easy fight for him. However, it seems McGregor wants to get the rematch with Khabib first.

“Well, Masvidal is at 170. I think Conor really wants is that rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov. He wants that rematch. He would rather take that fight right now and not fight Cowboy. He wants that fight really bad. Reality is it will be the biggest PPV ever in the history of the sport.”

White also stated that McGregor needs to win the fight against Cerrone to get the title rematch against Kahbib. That apart, Khabib is scheduled to defend his title against Tony Ferguson on April 18th. Hence a win for Khabib over Ferguson will certainly make the Conor vs Khabib rematch more feasible according to Dana White.

“Well, a couple of things got to happen first. He has got to beat Cowboy CerroneEspecially at 170, without Cowboy having to cut weight. Then Khabib has to beat Tony Ferguson. If both of those things happen I think we can make the rematch.”

There are a ton of great fights ahead of Conor McGregor if he manages to get the job done against Cerrone. However, it is easier said than done. While Conor has only fought twice in the welterweight division Cerrone has a fair amount of experience at 170. It would be intriguing to see how Conor performs at 170 after such a long layoff.
