George St Pierre vs Khabib Nurmagomedov. What seemed unreal at one point seems possible now. In the post-fight media interview when asked about the possibilities of a super fight between GSP and Nurmagomedov, UFC president, Dana White agreed that the fight may happen in the future.
Well, there might be many reasons for which Dana White has changed his mind about this super fight. White wanted to protect his one of the most prized possessions, Khabib Nurgamgomedov. There was a strong possibility that GSP would have beaten Nurgamgomedov and leave UFC again as he has done in the past. Although that would be a great fight for both the fans and the promoters, a defeat against GSP would devalue Nurgamgomedov’s stock going ahead.
However, after UFC 242 it’s safe to say that GSP is not going to get a victory over Nurmagomedov. Well, things got interesting when the undefeated lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov called out GSP for a fight at 155 division for the new belt.
When asked about the GSP fight Nurmagomedov said:
“George St Pierre is great. A great guy, great champion, and a great athlete. he is very good example for young kids. I know he is retired, but if he wanna come back and if he feel hungry and if he feel he can improve his legacy with fight with me and he can make 155, I am waiting for him.”
Khabib also made it clear that he would like to put the lightweight title on the line for the fight too when he teased GSP by saying:
“And I think maybe he like new belt. If he like I can give him just only for one photo. Then he have to give me back the fight. If you wanna fight welcome.”
Not only that the lightweight champion also wishes to provide a helping hand to the unprivileged parts of the world when he says that he wants to fight GSP in Africa and donate all the revenue generated for charity. Nurmagomedov said:
“Maybe I can fight with GSP. George St Pierre is very very big star. They can build this arena in next three months. And we can fight somehwere in Congo. And all money we make we can use on charity.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov has made it clear that he doesn’t want to go up to welterweight for a fight with GSP. So it seems GSP has to come down to lightweight for the super fight. However, GSP has fought all his life in the welterweight division before he moved up to middleweight for the second title. Hence it is hard to imagine GSP cutting down weights for lightweight after so many years of inactivity.
However, Khabib Nurmagomedev is the champion and he pulls the strings now. So it’s up to George St Pierre whether he wants the biggest fight of his career against Khabib Nurmagomedov which can shut down all arguments on the greatest of all time.
