Laver Cup Announces Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas as Final Participants

One of the new-born rivalries at the ATP Tour between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios is set to make a new chapter at the Laver Cup 2019 in Geneva in September.

World No.7, Stefanos Tsitsipas is geared up to make a debut for Team Europe at the Laver Cup 2019, which is scheduled to take place in Geneva in Switzerland next month. While Nick Kyrgios was also confirmed for Team World for the third time, the organizers of the Laver Cup said on Tuesday.

The Greek star, Stefanos Tsitsipas is excited to join the Team Europe for the three-day team event between Europe and Rest of the World, which became a part of the ATP Tour for the first time in 2019. “The Laver Cup is a unique and memorable event in tennis and I can’t wait to join Team Europe in Geneva,” Tsitsipas said.

Tsitsipas was also obliged to share the court with the legends like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. He said, “For me personally it’s like a dream come true to be part of this incredible team, with Roger and Rafa, who I’ve looked up to since I was a little kid, along with Dom (Dominic Thiem), Sascha (Alexander Zverev), and Fabio (Fognini).”

He further explained that it will be a new experience for him to play on a team. “In tennis, we are always out on the court alone, it’s such an individual sport. It’s going to be a new experience for me to play on a team, especially this team of unbelievable champions, and it will be an honor to join all these legends at the Laver Cup,” the 21-year-old concluded.

Bjorn Borg, Captain of Team Europe was delighted to have the Greek in his team. “I am very happy to have Stefanos join Team Europe, it’s fantastic, he has been doing so well this year and has had some spectacular results,” Borg said.

He further added, “It’s so important to bring in these exciting new, young players, the next generation, to our team, alongside our champions like Roger and Rafa Stefanos is a truly exciting young player and I know the fans will also love him.”

On the other hand, Nick Kyrgios revealed that the Laver Cup is his favorite event and the favorite week of the season. “I’ve always said that the Laver Cup is my favorite week of the year, and how much it means to me to get around the team and play for something bigger than just myself,” Kyrgios said.

The Australian further explained that the Laver Cup is not about him but it’s about everything that he can do to make a positive environment for his team. He said, “At the Laver Cup it’s not just about me, it’s about doing everything I can to help the other guys feel comfortable, prepare for their matches and even give them some energy from the side of the court if that’s what needs to be done.”

The Team World has been on the losing side in the last two editions and Nick Kyrgios aims to win the title this year for his team. He continued, “We’ve had some heartbreaking losses over the past couple of years and it means the world to me to have the chance to get out there again with the team and try to get the win for Team World.”
