Lewis Hamilton romped to a fifth championship title last week in Mexico. In doing so Hamilton became only the second player to win it five times in the Formula one history. Hamilton’s early days were however spent with another title winner, Fernando Alonso, at McLaren. Alonso is now on the verge of ending his professional F1 career, as he prepares for the final two races of the season.

While, many believe that Alonso could have added more to his achievements, Hamilton believes that the decision was all in Alonso’s hands. “He is a phenomenal driver, sure, he could have won more championships, but it’s not like he didn’t have the chance,” said Lewis Hamilton, in an exclusive interview with Auto Motor und Sport.“It just depends on making the right decisions outside the cockpit,” added Hamilton.

Hamilton questioned Alonso’s decisions, as he said- “If you think like he did that you control the driver market, you can’t be surprised when you end up without something in your hands. Because Seb (Vettel) and I were also on the market.”

Despite saying this, Hamilton revealed that he had the utmost respect towards Alonso. “I have a lot of respect for Fernando,” said lewis Hamilton. “He is a phenomenal driver, and I believe his reputation has not suffered in recent years”, he added.“I think people know what he brought inside and outside of formula one.”

Fernando Alonso, moved on to Renault and Ferrari after McLaren. However he was unable to add to his tally of two world championships after that. Alonso, felt that Hamilton was not done yet, and that he was the favorite to win the title again in the next season. “He is one of the top so I think he should be happy with that. And it’s not finished yet”, said Alonso.“I think next year he starts as a favorite again so that is a good thing.”
