MLB Draft 2025: Mets Shock With Pick of Pitchers With UCL Surgery History
The Mets made waves on Day 2 of the 2025 MLB Draft by selecting two college pitchers, Peyton Prescott and Nathan Hall, in the 5th and 6th rounds. The surprising part is that both of them have undergone UCL surgery.
Yankees pick Core Jackson as their 5th‑round pick (No. 164 overall)! Here's his career gist so far:
* Voted first-team All-Conference in both of his seasons at Utah (2024, 2025). * Started all 100 games played at Utah, and 136 of 144 total NCAA contests throughout his collegiate career. * Maintained a .363 batting average during his two seasons. Recorded 34 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs, 85 RBIs, and 112 runs scored. * Finished his Utah career ranked among the program's all-time leaders in: Batting Average (9th; .363), On-Base Percentage (10th; .455), Stolen Bases (T-10th; 37) * Graduated with a Bachelor's degree in sociology.
Phillies pick Gabe Craig, seeking immediate bullpen reinforcement!
The Philadelphia Phillies, seeking immediate bullpen reinforcement, selected Gabe Craig in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. Craig, a sixth-year senior right-hander from Baylor, is already 24 years old, making him a more mature prospect. He demonstrated significant potential this season, posting an impressive 0.56 ERA over 32 innings, accompanied by a dominant 51:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a plus slider. Given his collegiate performance and experience, Craig is a strong candidate to move quickly through the professional ranks, potentially reaching Double-A soon after turning pro.
Gabe Davis goes to White Sox!
The White Sox initiated Round 5 of the 2025 MLB Draft by selecting Gabe Davis, a towering 6-foot-9 right-handed pitcher from Oklahoma State. However, Davis isn't the tallest pitcher drafted so far today; that distinction belongs to the Twins' fourth-round pick, Jason Reitz, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-11.
Yankees pick Pico Kohn!
"Kohn underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2023, missing that entire season, then wasn’t great in his return last year, so he went undrafted even though he was eligible. This season, he finished in the top 20 in strikeouts across Division 1, with a 32.6 percent strikeout rate. He has an above-average slider that has some sharp tilt and big horizontal break. His fastball is more average, coming from a low three-quarters slot, and he gives up too much hard contact on it, although if he uses his changeup more in pro ball the fastball might be more playable. He’ll be 23 in October, so some draft model-heavy teams may crush him. I see a potential fifth starter here if he can keep the ball in the park enough," The Athletic's Keith Law's scouting report says.
Round 4: Picks 131-135
131: Philadelphia Phillies select pitcher Sean Youngerman (Oklahoma State) 132: Cleveland Guardians select third baseman Luke Hill (Ole Miss) 133: New York Mets select pitcher Peter Kussow (Arrowhead Union HS - WI) 134: New York Yankees select pitcher Pico Kohn (Mississippi State) 135: Los Angeles Dodgers select shortstop Aidan West (Long Reach HS - MD)
Cubs pick Kaleb Wing!
"Wing was somewhat of a pop-up guy this spring, as his velocity went up about a grade. Pitching in the wood-bat West Coast League this summer, he was still working 92-94 with a 55 curveball. He has a compact delivery, a little short in back, that he repeats well. His frame is slight, so he may not have as much projection as the typical 18-year-old with his height. He’s committed to Loyola Marymount," posted The Athletic's Keith Law.
Giants pick Lorenzo Meola!
The Giants made their fourth-round pick by selecting Lorenzo Meola, a shortstop from Stetson. Interestingly, Meola is the cousin of former USMNT goalie Tony Meola, leading to the humorous observation that if baseball ever adopts penalty kicks in extra innings, the Giants would have an unusual advantage, reports The Athletic.
Round 4: Picks 121-125
121: Chicago Cubs select pitcher Kaleb Wing (Scotts Valley HS - CA) 122: Seattle Mariners select pitcher Mason Peters (Dallas Baptist) 123: Arizona Diamondbacks select pitcher Dean Livingston (Hebron Christian Academy - GA) 124: Baltimore Orioles select shortstop Colin Yeaman (University of California - Irvine) 125: Milwaukee Brewers select pitcher Joshua Flores (Lake Central HS - IN)
Round 4: Picks 116-120
- 116: San Francisco Giants select shortstop Lorenzo Meola (Stetson) - 117: Tampa Bay Rays select pitcher Dominic Fritton (NC State) - 118: Boston Red Sox select shortstop Mason White (Arizona) - 119: Minnesota Twins select pitcher Jason Reitz (Oregon) -120: St. Louis Cardinals select pitcher Cade Crossland (Oklahoma)
Round 4: Picks 111-115
- 111: Washington Nationals select pitcher Miguel Sime Jr. (Poly Prep Country Day School - NY) - 112: Toronto Blue Jays select pitcher Micah Bucknam (Dallas Baptist) - 113: Pittsburgh Pirates select shortstop Gustavo Melendez (Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Merced - PR) - 114: Cincinnati Reds select outfielder Mason Neville (Oregon) - 115: Texas Rangers select pitcher Mason McConnaughey (Nebraska)
2025 MLB Draft - Day One Recap
2025 MLB Draft Day 1 wrapped up in Atlanta with some interesting twists and notable picks. The Washington Nationals, holding the first overall pick, took high school shortstop Eli Willits. But the twist of the story was the Los Angeles Angels' draft selection. Proving the draft projections wrong, they brought home UC Santa Barbara pitcher Tyler Bremner as No. 2. The Seattle Mariners got their hands on the 2025 College World Series champion, LSU left-hander Kade Anderson, using the No. 3 pick. And Ethan Holliday indeed made it to the top five picks by being drafted by the Colorado Rockies as the No. 4 pick. For the teams, it was a night of gambles, strategy, and, in some cases, surprise. Now, all awaits Day 2 of the MLB Draft, covering rounds 4 through 20, scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
