It seems Carlo Ancelotti’s honeymoon period is already over at Everton as he lost a FA Cup tie against Liverpool. Now in the kind of form that Liverpool is in, it’s not really that bad a performance if you lose by a goal. Though considering Liverpool almost player their second side does make the loss look ever so worrying.
Jurgen Klopp decided to rest players like Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohamad Salah and Roberto Firmino. The German also gave debuts to three new players, including new signing Takumi Minamino, Nathaniel Phillips and Yasser Larouci. While Carlo Ancelotti went in with a strong side including the likes Gylfi Sigurðsson, Richarlison and Theo Walcott.
It wasn’t the most pleasant half for Liverpool as they conceded quite a few chances. Though they all were spectacularly saved by back-up keeper Adrian. Three of the best chances fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Mason Holgate and Richarlison, though none of them converted these chances. And they were made to pay for it. For Liverpool, it was a match of two half, they really struggled in the first half while also losing James Milner to an injury.
Though the managed to grow into the match and put up a fight in the second half. Till the 71st minute, it was all in balance, until Curtis Jones thought of some ideas. The youngster who wasn’t even born when Everton last won against their Merseyside rivals scored the winner. It was a sensational effort from 25 yards out as he curled the ball from the left corner of the box into the top right corner of the post beating a desperate Jordan Pickford’s lunging hands.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool Manager
“I saw a sensationally good performance of a not very experienced team with a lot of players playing for the first time on this kind of stage, in front of this crowd, against the opponent. It was outstanding,
“We cannot always play the best football in the world but we can fight like nobody else.”
Carlo Ancelotti, Everton Manager
“We knew that Liverpool put in fresh players and that the intensity could be a high intensity, so I think the defeat arrived because we were not able to keep the intensity in the second half,
“We are going to speak and work together to find a solution to help improve the team. I know we have to work.”
