Lucie Safarova Postpones Her Retirement From Tennis

The Czech, Lucie Safarova played her last tournament in front of her home crowd. She teamed up alongside Barbora Stefkova for the doubles match in Prague Open 2019.  Today, her team was close to victory, they missed two match points and were defeated 6-4, 4-6, (13-11) by Makoto Ninomiya and Yana Sizikova in the opening round of the J&T Banka Prague Open. Last week she was the finalist in the Stuttgart Open.

A few months ago, the former World Number five, Lucie Safarova announced about hitting the hay on her home soil, but apparently, she has extended her tenure on the WTA tour by a major. The former French Open finalist, Safarova decides to feature at Roland Garros 2019 after she lost her opening round match in Prague.

“I’ll probably play Paris,” Safarova declared after her defeat. She is contemplating upon to cancel her request for the main draw wild-card for singles at Roland Garros 2019. In the doubles category, she will integrate with Bethanie Mattek-Sands. “Of course we would like to go as far as possible, we won the title twice. I’m sure we won’t just want to attend”, she said.

The five-time major doubles champion, Lucie Safarova shares profound moments with the Paris major. She lost the final match on the Philippe Cartier Court to Serena Williams in the year 2015. Moreover, she lifted up the doubles title twice in Paris in tandem with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Also, the rest of her major crowns were garnered alongside Mattek-Sands. With the American, Lucie Safarova held the WTA’s doubles one ranking for six weeks from August 2017 to October 2017.

Lucie Safarova was all set to call off her career at Australian Open 2019, but her wrist tendinitis obstructed her from engaging herself in the Melbourne major, which eventually led to a delay in her retirement.
