Matches on Day 5 of the Australian Open

Indian hopes ended on Day 4 of the $7,50,000 Australian Open Superseries as World No.1 Saina Nehwal lost her quarterfinals match against Shixian Wang of China. Defending her title, Saina suffered a straight sets loss 15-21, 13-21 to World No.6 Shixian. With no Indian player in the semifinals, Indian fans don’t have much to cheer about, but there are some great matches to look for on Day 5 of Australian Open, with the spots in Sunday’s finals up for grabs. Here is the list of 5 matches which are worth a watch tomorrow.

  1. Victor Axelson v/s J. Jorgensen – It’s an all Denmark affair in the semifinals, which means one Denmark player will definitely play in Sunday’s finals. World No.3 J. Jorgensen defeated World No.9 Victor Axelson in there last meeting at quarterfinals of All-England Badminton championship. But its not going to be easy since Victor Axelson is in great form and pulled out the biggest upset in Men’s category by defeating the Great Lin Dan of China.

  1. Carolina Marin v/s Sung J Hyun – Day 4 witnessed the biggest upset in the Women’s category as Olympic Champion Li Xuerui of China suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Sung J Hyun of Korea. World No.7 Korean defeated Chinese World No.1 in the 3-set battle. World No.3 Carolian Marin leads 4-1 in there last 5 clashes; both players last met during the All England Badminton open where Marin defeated the Korean went on to win the title.

  1. L Yong Dae/Y Yeong Song v/s Chai Biao/Hong Wei – The World No.1 Korean pair of L. Yong Dad and Y. Yeong Song registered a win over the World No.6 Japanese duo of H Endo and K Hayakawa in their quarterfinal match, and now they face the World No.5 Chinese pair of Chai Biao & Hong Wei. The two pairs have met 5 times in the last 2 years and the World No.1 pair lead 4-1. Theie last meeting was during the Badminton Asia Championships where the Korean pair prevailed over the Chinese pair.

  1. T. Ahmad/L. Natsir v/s Lee C H/Chau H   – The World No.3 Indonesian pair of T.Ahmad and L. Natsir registered a win over the World No.7 pair of C. Adcock and  G. White in their quarterfinals match, and in the semifinals will square off against the World No.13 pair of  Lee C H and Chau H W of Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s duo is unseeded in the tournament, and they came into the semifinals by defeating much higher seeds – including the World No.4 pair of J. Fischer and C. Pedersen of Denmark in their quarterfinal match. The two pairs last played against each other at the Badminton Asia Championships 2015 where the Indonesian pair defeated the Hong Kong pair.

  1. M. Matsutomo/A. Takahashi v/s Tang J/Tian Q – The World No.1 Japanese pair of M. Matsutomk & A. Takahashi will face off against the 6th seeded Chinese pair of Tang J and Tian Q for a place in Sunday’s Final of Women’s Doubles category.
