Just when life was returning to the free agency of Cody Bellinger, someone again pulled the rug from under him. The talented slugger’s free agency has been a fascinating journey till now. While most fans expected that things would be a bit cool because of Bellinger’s record, no one expected it to turn into an ice age. Now it’s up to Scott Boras to find heat in the snow.

But the question is – is Boras to be blamed here? After all, one of the biggest complaints regarding Bellinger’s deal has been its high price. While Boras justifies it by reminding everyone of the MVP-winning Bellinger, executives retort with his 2020-2022 performances. Now with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees both growing a bit cold on Cody Love – one needs to ask – is there trouble in the Bellinger Palace?

The reports of the Yankees being interested in Cody Bellinger hit like a tank. It sent fans scrambling as they wondered – could we actually see Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger in one lineup? While the fans were in dreamland, experts wondered just how valid these dreams were. Now in the Foul Territory Show insider, Michael Kay has discredited the interest of the Yankees in Cody Bellinger.

Saying he’d be “stunned” if the Yankees signed Bellinger, Kay was clear that if the Yankees do spend more money “it’s going to be to bolster the bullpen”. The reasons that Kay gave for Bellinger’s apparent mismatch with the Bombers were quite simple – they do not have the outfield space to play Bellinger.

This could come as a setback for Scott Boras and Cody Bellinger. Having a team like the Yankees enter the race at this point would have boosted the free agency of Bellinger. A boost is just what they need, especially, as the Cubs are not being urgent enough for Cody Love. While one reason for that is the apparent lack of competition, the biggest is the high expectations of Boras.

The high price situation isn’t unique to Cody Bellinger. Other fellow Boras clients – Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery are also having issues of their own. The common thread in all of their free agencies has been their suitors’ hesitation in meeting the asked price by Scott Boras.
