Despite Horror Season, New York Yankees Maintain Priorities and Give Back to the Community in Heartwarming Gesture

New York Yankees have had a rollercoaster of a season. With injuries and underperformance plaguing the roster, the Bronx Bombers are fighting for their life. In the middle of one of their worst seasons yet, they’re still giving back to society in whatever way they can. The same can also be said of Gleyber Torres, star shortstop for the Yankees.

Going from an All-Star to coming under fire from Yankee fans, the slugger is still hanging on. Amid constant trade talks, Torres looks likely to stay in the Pinstripes for now. And as the regular season continues, the Yankees slugger is lending a helping hand to a great cause.

The New York Yankees become hosts of the Special Olympics

The Special Olympics have but one purpose – to give an equal opportunity in sports to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Gleyber Torres is serving as their ambassador for yet another year as the 2023 edition saw him playing with New Yorkers.

The Yankees’ official Instagram posted a few stories, showing the slugger in action. One is a video that shows Torres pitching. The caption reads, “@gleyberdavid is a @specialolympics special ambassador and worked with participants to share insights and life skills from his personal journey.

Another one shows him playing catch from a different angle, with the caption, “The goal of the clinic is to learn not only learn the game of baseball but also important life skills.

Yet another video shows everyone from the Special Olympics org present there taking a selfie with Torres as they all yell ‘Yankee!” The shortstop also re-shared the stories on his Instagram profile, adding more pictures from the event. “A big thanks to Bank of America for having me at their Play It Forward Baseball Clinic with Special Olympics New York athletes. I offered them advice on how to be successful on and off the field,” read the caption.

Torres Joined Willson Contreras For a Special Announcement

In 2020, Torres and St Louis Cardinals’ Contreras became the first MLB players to become Special Olympics ambassadors. Both Venezuelans and bilinguals, the baseballers stand for a special category. “The movement of inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities across the Americas,” according to the official Special Olympics website.
