Derek Jeter has been a fan favorite for over two decades now. Many skilled players have come and gone, but his legacy for the New York Yankees is irreplaceable. He dedicated his entire professional career to the Yankees. And that is why the Yankees fans respect him so much.

Though Jeter has always been a gentleman of the game, he has always been the biggest rival of the Boston Red Sox. And recently, he proved it. Years after his retirement, there is a new Jeter in the town. Yes! The much-talked-about Boston Red Sox prospect, Jeter Downs, made his big league debut on Wednesday.

The No. 5 prospect of the Red Sox, Jeter Downs, plays as a shortstop and second baseman. The 23-year-old shortstop received a loud cheer from the stands for his MLB debut. Downs also received a shout-out from the former captain of the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter. But there was one condition from the former Yankee.

Does Derek Jeter want his namesake to play for the Yankees?

The legacy of Derek Jeter is so big that it will take time for baseball fans to know a new “Jeter” in the game. During The Red Sox’s No. 5 prospect, Jeter Downs stepped on the plate for the last at-bat of his MLB debut. Whether he will become as successful as the Yankees’ legend is totally up to him. But the Red Sox rookie had the whole Fenway Park chanting his name in his debut game.

Even the Yankees legend Derek Jeter congratulated his namesake for his big league debut. But he congratulated Downs only if he plays for the Yankees someday.

Taking to Twitter, Jeter wrote, “Had the chance to meet Jeter Towns a few years ago (he wasn’t with the Red Sox then). Congratulations and good luck… unless you are playing the Yankees.”

Jeter also clarified that when he met the Red Sox star earlier, Downs was not a part of the Boston Red Sox.

Will the Red Sox’s Jeter be able to do what the other Jeter has done for the Yankees?

Jeter Downs is just a 23-year-old rookie. The Red Sox star has his entire career ahead of him. So it will be too early to make the call. But even if Downs wants to do it for the Red Sox, it will not be easy.
