Barry Bonds, records, and controversies are an inseparable combination. Just as famous Bonds was as a player, his image is equally infamous. While he stacked up on the batting records, the controversies kept piling up on the mound.

Barry Bonds played MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates and, most notably, for the San Francisco Giants. He was popular for his ability to slam home runs with ease. His athletic defense only further increased his value. Retired in 2007, he earned the reputation of a ‘Home Run King’.

Boasting magnificent achievements to his credit, Bonds is a 14-time All-Star player. Post-retirement, Bonds had a gigantic 762 career total home runs in his account. But as he got busted for taking steroids, his legacy got splattered with dirt stains.

Barry Bonds: The controversial coach

Despite all the gifted playing skills, Barry Bonds ruined his career through acts of infamy. Apart from the steroid scandal, he was also infamous for his arrogance. There are many instances of him mistreating and misbehaving with people.

Bonds got hired as the Miami Marlins hitting coach for the 2016 MLB season and beyond. But he got fired after one disastrous season. The prime reason is his ineffectiveness. He didn’t give attention to any player but made high demands regarding his payment. Bonds also angrily rushed out of the clubhouse while Marlins’ second baseman Dee Strange-Gordon was apologizing to the team for his performance-enhancing drug use.

However, realizing his mistakes, Bonds later publicly apologized by saying, “I’m to blame for the way I was portrayed because I was a dumba**. I was straight stupid and I’ll be the first to admit it. I mean, I was just flat-out dumb. What could I say? I am not going to try and justify the way I acted towards people. I was stupid.”

Bonds added, “It wasn’t an image that I invented on purpose. It actually escalated into that and then I maintained it. You know what I mean? It was never something that I really ever wanted. No one wants to be treated like that.”

And the Bond debate rages on

In 2007, Bonds got indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for his steroid intake. As a result, all of his extraordinary achievements got publicly refuted. Therefore, amidst fiery debates, Bonds is still awaiting a Hall Of Fame honor.
