Derek Jeter played organized baseball for more than 30 years of his life. He played in the Little Leagues, High-School, the Minor Leagues, and finally the MLB. During his career, Jeter showcased an intense love for the game and competing. Consequently, he won 5 World Series while establishing himself as one of the greatest to play the sport.

After retirement, Jeter became a part-owner in the Miami Marlins and served as the CEO from around September 2017 to February 2022. Some fans hoped that Jeter might play during his tenure as CEO but that was never on the cards.

Derek Jeter firmly rejected the idea of returning to play baseball

Derek Jeter appeared on an episode of the Drink Champs podcast that aired on November 5th. During this podcast, Jeter talked about baseball, his time as a player, and everything in between. When asked if he ever thought about playing while he was the owner of the Marlins, this is what Jeter said, “No no no no no no no no no no no no no no, let’s get one thing straight, I’m done. I would embarrass myself. I understand how difficult it is to play the game.”

This made it clear that once Jeter had retired, he had no thoughts of playing again or making a comeback. Although it may seem surprising coming from a guy who loves the game as Jeter does, it showed that he was done with that chapter of his life.

Jeter stepped down from his position as CEO of the Miami Marlins in February this year and even sold his ownership stake in the team.

How did Jeter end up playing professional baseball?

When he was around 5 years old, Jeter started playing in the Little Leagues while living in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was during this time that Jeter developed a love for baseball and became a passionate fan of the New York Yankees.

David Winfield was Jeter’s favorite player at the time and a huge inspiration for him to pursue baseball professionally. Jeter went on to play for Kalamazoo Central High School and established himself as a top prospect. Derek Jeter was then selected by the New York Yankees with the 6th pick in the 1992 MLB Draft. Jeter played in the Minor Leagues for 4 years before making his debut with the Yankees in 1995, playing 15 games.
