New York Mets ace Max Scherzer is one of the highest-paid baseball players in MLB. Known for his mischievous nature, Scherzer once challenged one of his ex-teammates to do a challenging task against the then Washington Nationals’ manager, Dusty Baker.
Currently playing for the New York Mets, Scherzer once played for the Washington Nationals. He has played seven seasons for the Nationals in Major League Baseball. Recently, a former Nationals teammate, Shawn Kelley, revealed an interesting incident with Scherzer and the team’s former manager, Dusty Baker.

Talking about Dusty Baker, he likes to keep things straight with his players. Regardless of how recognized a player is, Baker never shies away from pointing to their mistakes. And that is what makes him a brilliant manager. But back then, Scherzer was one of the craziest players on the Nationals’ roster. He made Kelley risk it all just for a bet.
Max Scherzer lost $1,000 to Shawn Kelly in a bet
Back then, between 2015 and 2018, Baker was the Washington Nationals’ manager. And if the reports are correct, he was very strict. Per a recent report from NY Post, former Nationals player Shawn Kelley revealed Baker was very honest in his pep talks. And players used to call it “Dusty-isms.”

Kelley recalled one of “Dusty-isms,” in which he explained how Baker lost his cool against pitchers for their poor performances.
Now, this is when Scherzer comes into the scene. At the time, Kelley was not a high-salaried player, so he owed a few bucks to Scherzer in NBA bets. Scherzer promised to give $1,000 to Kelley if he goes and challenges Baker.
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll erase $1,000 of your debt if you go out there and you just throw one warmup pitch and just say, ‘F–k it, I’m ready to go,” Scherzer had said.

And guess what? Kelley threw one warmup pitch, and he did what Scherzer asked him to do.
“I took a bunch of extra warmup pitches in the bullpen and I went out there and threw one warmup pitch and said, ‘Hey, I’m ready.’ The ump was like, ‘What?’ And I’m like, ‘no, I’m ready, let’s go,’” Kelley recalled.
