What special role did Donald Trump play for the Yankees?
According to Randy Levine, former President of the Yankees, Steinbrenner considered Trump a good luck charm for the team. This led to Trump being invited to a number of Yankees games and watching games with Steinbrenner.
In an interview with NBC News in 2019, Levine said, “George always used to say we had a great record when Donald was at the table with him. And because George was superstitious, especially during the playoffs, he would always call Donald to make sure he was there. George believed he was good luck.”
Trump and Steinbrenner were good friends and built a close bond over the sport. Trump even went as far as to say that Steinbrenner was his best friend. Their friendship predated Trump’s decades as a Yankees fan.
Following Steinbrenner’s death in 2010, Donald Trump has continued going to Yankees games. And was even seen at Yankee Stadium in the years leading to his presidency. People around Donald Trump have often claimed that if he ever bought a baseball team, it would be the Yankees.
