Derek Jeter endured a much longer career on the baseball diamond than most others can merely aspire to. Those many years brought him invaluable experience and wisdom. So he never stood back from sharing his golden advice and shared it for an absolutely $0 fee. A famous ex-teammate of Jeter once thus benefited from the former captain’s expert suggestion.

Nick Swisher is a retired multi-utility player who played for the New York Yankees from 2009 to 2012. Apart from the Yankees, Swisher also played for the Athletics, White Sox, Indians, and Braves. But his most successful MLB tenure came with the Yankees, as is obvious. So recently, Swisher described how Jeter’s pointers guided him through.

Derek Jeter’s suggestions enlightened his former teammate

Jeter famously played out his entire MLB career as the Yankees’ loyal shortstop from 1995 to 2014. Within that time frame, he remarkably became a 14-time All-Star player and won five World Series championships. One of those title victories came in 2009, which was apparently the year when Swisher donned the Bronx pinstripes. For Swisher, it remained his only prized trophy credit but became a memorable year among elite compatriots.

Jeter in particular seemingly had a great influence over Swisher. Notably, Swisher’s magnificent performances in 2010 earned him his solitary All-Star appearance. Now a podcaster himself, Swisher recently graced the Talkin’ Yanks podcast. The star guest thus opened up on how following Jeter’s advice had helped a great deal.

Speaking on the podcast, Swisher said, “I heard Derek Jeter. Somebody asked him, ‘what you would tell your younger self or what you would tell a young athlete out there?’ And it was one of the best piece of advice, that I could ever even think about. I use it so much now. I have learned so much of the things that man has taught me bro. It is absolutely crazy.”

Swisher added, saying, “But he said, ‘learn how to deal with failure early. Because the problem is if you don’t know how to deal with failure on an everyday basis, we are in a job where you fail seven out of 10 times, baby.”

Thus, Swisher concluded his MLB career in 2015. He smashed a career total of 245 home runs with 803 RBIs, averaging 0.249. Most importantly, Swisher maintained his consistency on the offense across all of his seasons in the ballpark.
