$340 Million Star Mariah Carey Once Turned a Derek Jeter Fan’s Hate Around With an Empathetic Gesture: “Used to Do a Job Like You”

Mariah Carey is arguably one of the best singers to grace the music scene in the last few decades. Her ability to reach the highest notes and her incredibly melodic voice makes her popular with the masses. Not only that, but Carey’s storied dating history also means she’s constant fodder for news outlets. And of course, one of those stars includes former MLB legend, Derek Jeter. Before the Rooftop singer made a name for herself with her voice, she also faced her share of challenges.

The arts and the sports fields are equally challenging to make a name in. But both Jeter and Carey are icons in their individual fields. While Jeter’s own life may not have been the easiest, Carey’s mother worked multiple jobs to support her. The singer herself worked odd jobs to make ends meet. She even once gave some advice to one of his fans that turned their opinion of her!

Being famous doesn’t always mean one is well-liked. People may know someone’s name but don’t necessarily like them. And Carey was not popular with some of Derek Jeter’s fans back in the day. The Mariah Carey Archives once posted stories told by Derek Jeter supporters, and one, in particular, shared the advice they got from Carey when it came to cleaning.

Celebrities in the entertainment industry often have stories from their past where they had to work difficult jobs before making a breakthrough in their field. After growing up with a single mom, Carey once worked as a cleaner at a salon. Sharing the admittedly not-very-good advice, the fan said Carey told them, “I just use to dump the bucket water on the floor, and chill out for 15 minutes. Then I would walk back out like I did something productive.”

The fan went on to say, “I mean, I have actively hated this woman for so long, and then here she was chatting it up with me…I could actually feel myself starting to like her.”

What else did Jeter’s fans think of Carey?

Referring to her appealing looks, one fan commented, “She was very beautiful in person and smaller than I thought. She was very mild and even seemed kind of shy when talking to the fans.”

Another fan described how they met after one of her shows. “The show went great…we walked up to her…She was so nice. Looked me in the eye when talking and just chatted for a few,” they said.
