Falling short for 16 years, the New York Yankees may now finally change things with just this one trade. Anthony Volpe. With options in free agency, the Yankees’ faith in Volpe seems to be fading fast.

The New York Post recently reported the Yankees’ growing interest in Corey Seager and how he could be a great replacement for Anthony Volpe.
“Should Seager be made available, some have linked the Yankees since they showed previous interest and Anthony Volpe’s lack of development in three seasons.”

But it won’t be very easy.
The New York Yankees maintained consistent faith in Anthony Volpe despite noticeable underperformance during the 2025 season. Over 153 games, he committed 19 errors while recording only 326 assists and 171 putouts at shortstop. Offensively, Volpe contributed 72 RBIs and 114 hits, producing a batting average of .212 and an OPS of .663.
Fans witnessed his struggles, including leading the league in miscues, as the team continued to back him in every game.

Now, with the offseason going on, Corey Seager emerged as a potential solution to the Yankees’ shortstop struggles, altering the team’s priorities.
Seager, a five-time All-Star, produced 21 home runs and posted 151 OPS+ while ranking seventh in WAR during his latest healthy season.

Acquiring Seager would require taking on $186 million across six years, likely necessitating a combination of top prospects and controllable pitching assets. Yankees management would need to weigh Volpe’s underwhelming performance against Seager’s proven impact to improve infield reliability and lineup strength.
The addition of the 2023 Rangers’ World Series hero could decisively influence the New York Yankees’ postseason prospects, providing both offensive firepower and defensive stability.

His prior seasons included 637 at-bats with 155 hits and 12 triples, demonstrating his ability to sustain production over a full schedule.
With Volpe failing to contribute in runs created and defensive plays consistently, Seager could fill a critical gap.
The choice represents a clear fork for the Yankees: rely on a struggling in-house shortstop or invest in a veteran who might determine World Series contention. After all, he led Texas in its first WS championship, becoming the only player to become World Series MVP in both leagues (another with the Dodgers in 2020).

For the Yankees, sticking with Volpe risks another October exit that fans have grown tired of enduring. Corey Seager offers both proven production and defensive reliability, making him a logical, albeit expensive, solution. Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone now face a choice that could define this franchise’s next chapter.
The Yankees are not the only ones going after Corey Seager
Corey Seager is not exactly waiting by the phone for the Bronx Bombers. Everyone else wants a piece too, and that could make the chase messier than a locker room after a seven-game series.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly considering reuniting with Corey Seager to bolster their roster.
Seager drove in 50 RBIs over 102 games in 2025. His 19 doubles added depth to the lineup, providing consistent power and run-producing ability. Analysts note that his presence could help the Dodgers maintain dominance during a potential three-peat run.

Seager’s addition would also create significant defensive flexibility for the Dodgers’ infield configuration.

Mookie Betts could shift to second base, while Seager anchors shortstop, allowing Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman to remain at third and first. Will Smith’s catching remains secure, completing a highly productive infield combination. This flexibility would enable strategic lineup adjustments without sacrificing defense or offensive production.
If the Dodgers act quickly, Corey Seager could transform their infield into an unstoppable machine. Meanwhile, Brian Cashman and the Yankees might find themselves outmaneuvered in a chase that’s getting chaotic. At this pace, Corey Seager’s decision could define which team truly dominates the next season.
