Georges St-Pierre has long been rumored for a fight against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. While those were rumors, ‘GSP’ himself has decided to talk about the matchup with Marc Raimondi. He revealed the required circumstances for the fight to happen.

The dual-UFC champion said, “The thing is, I am 39. Three years ago, when I retired, we tried to make the fight happen. I was all-in on trying to make that fight happen and UFC didn’t want to do it. Now three years have passed by and I don’t know if UFC gonna change their mind. Even the UFC want to make the fight and change their mind, the star need to be aligned. You know time have passed by and I haven’t cut weight for long-time. I think Khabib want to make that fight at 155, and I never fought at 155. I can surely do 155 because I am not a big welterweight, but the problem is I have never been there. So maybe my performance could be compromised.”

GSP elaborated on the issue with the weight class.

“I think it’s a big mistake for me to go to 155 because I could make it, but my performance could be jeopardized because I have never been there. You know what I mean? I never been a big welterweight and I could go down, but it would be hard. I am not a big fan of cutting weight either.”

Georges St-Pierre will not fight at 155

GSP clarified that he can make the weight, but it doesn’t look like he wants to take that chance. Obviously, fighting in an unfamiliar weight class will make a fighter hesitant, especially if you are going up against a beast like Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Considering this is a legacy fight, Khabib could just move up to welterweight. It doesn’t seem like a weight class jump will be a big issue for him, but facing someone of GSP’s caliber in an unfamiliar weight class might be an issue for even the best in the modern-day.

Nevertheless, this fight would be an absolute treat to watch if it ever happens. The UFC would clearly wait to see what transpires between Justin Gaethje and Khabib at UFC 254 before devoting their attention to booking St-Pierre against Nurmagomedov.
