Kamaru Usman has firmly established himself as one of the greatest champions at 170-pounds. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has five title defenses to his name and is on a 15-fight win streak, just one behind the all-time record held by Anderson Silva (16).

Although he does not have the same credentials as a champion like Georges St-Pierre does, Usman is a close second in terms of the greatest champions the welterweight division has ever seen in the UFC. However, in order to establish himself as an all-time great, many believe he needs to go up to middleweight and fight for a second belt.

Henry Cejudo, in a recent video, shared his thoughts on the same. On the Triple C and Schmo Show, he said, “I’m sure if it’s the African pride, I kind of get that, but I don’t get that. Actually, as a matter of fact, I really don’t get that because to me, it’s all about legacy. Somebody else in the near future is going to be able to go through the same run that Kamaru Usman did.”

“But the difference is that, can you win a second belt? And can you defend that second belt? And that’s what I want from ‘The Nigerian Nightmare.’ I want him to go up. I want him to fight Izzy (Adesanya), and I just believe he has a perfect style to beat somebody like Izzy because he has wrestling.”

‘Triple C’ continued, “You’ve already lapped the division, Kamaru Usman. You’ve already beat Colby twice…. There’s only one take in my side, and that’s saying go up and fight your African brother because this is about legacy.”(h/t mmajunkie.usatoday.com)

In today’s day and age, it has become a norm for a dominant champion to go up and challenge for a second belt. Israel Adesanya is the most recent example.

The Nigerian Nightmare’ has stated on multiple occasions that he would not fight Adesanya, as that was his brother. He also stated that Africa having two champions is better than one person having two belts.

Therefore, there is little to no chance that Usman takes on Adesanya for the middleweight belt. However, if Adesanya does get dethroned, Usman will find it hard to pass up the opportunity to become a two-division world champion in the UFC.
