Alistair Overeem took on a tough challenge in Alexander Volkov this weekend at UFC Vegas 18. ‘The Demolition Man’ went into the fight on the back of a two-fight win streak. He had not secured three consecutive wins since 2015. A win on Sunday would not only have ended this run, but also propelled him towards another title shot.

However, things did not go as planned for ‘The Reem’. Alexander Volkov put on an extremely clinical performance and demolished Overeem in the very first round itself before putting the final nail in the coffin in round two. The loss has now derailed Overeem’s title ambitions once again.

Following his loss, Overeem took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the fight. He said, You’re a true warrior @volkov_alex Congrats on the win! Yesterday wasn’t my night. I could not recover from that punch in the first round after I broke my nose. My highest priority right now is to heal up and spend some well-deserved time with the family. I’ll be back in the gym soon though. Thank you all for your support! I see the comments, you guys are the best.”

What’s next for Alistair Overeem?

The UFC billed the fight as potentially one of the last times UFC fans would see Overeem in the octagon. Leading up to the fight, Alistair was not coy about the fact that this would be his last run towards a title. Although the 40-year-old had looked brilliant in his last two wins, age is sure to play a factor in his performances.

Overeem is a multiple organization MMA champion. However, the UFC belt has always eluded him. He had challenged for the title against Stipe Miocic, but came up short.

Alistair surely does not have enough left in the tank to mount another title challenge. Therefore, the big question will now be if he chooses to continue fighting in the UFC and acts as a gatekeeper, or finds another home to wrap up his illustrious career.
