Stephen Thompson accepted a particularly tough assignment when he accepted a fight against top-ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns. ‘Wonderboy’ went into the fight on the back of a two-fight win streak against the likes of Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal. Winning the fight against Burns would have put him in prime position for another shot at the 170-pound title.

However, Thompson came up short. Following the loss, as he does often, Thompson took to his YouTube Channel to share his thoughts on the fight and what happened in the build-up to it. The former title challenge shared a shocking incident that occurred at the ceremonial weigh-ins at UFC 264

He said, “While you’re there, we have food and I’ve got like five shakes that I have to drink, along with some water. Now I’m depleted of pretty much everything at this point, and these shakes have a ton of sodium, sugars, vitamins, minerals, potassium — it’s got everything you can think of in a shake, so it’s rough on the body if you chug it, right?.”

Wonderboy’ continued, “I’m sitting there with my dad with a bunch of fighters around me and people are coming over to try and talk to me, and I already drank my first drink along with like two water bottles. And then I started getting — something started to happen to me. Dad runs over there and pushes some UFC fighters away to try and get this thing to me — and he doesn’t get it to me. I projectile vomit everywhere. In front of the entire UFC roster. In front of everybody”(h/t bjpenn.com)

Will Stephen Thompson ever fight for the UFC title again?

‘Wonderboy’ has previously fought twice for UFC gold. Both times against former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. The first fight was judged a draw, and the Thompson came up short in the second fight. The common consensus was that if he could get past Burns, he would earn himself a title shot, which would probably be his last given he is 38-years old.

Unfortunately for Thompson coming up short against Burns has meant that he will have to secure a few more wins under his name before he can stake a claim to the title. It will be easier said than done given the welterweight division is stacked with talent and that age is not on his side.
