‘Let’s Go Baby’- Marvin Vettori Calls Out Paulo Costa For a Fight

Marvin Vettori took on Jack Hermansson in the main event at UFC Vegas 16 tonight. ‘The Joker’ had fights against the likes of Darren Till and Holland canceled before he found an opponent in ‘The Italian Dream’. The two men fought at middleweight. By headlining the event, Vettori became the first Italian-born fighter to feature in a main event under the promotion. 

Hermansson is ranked fourth in the division. ‘The Italian Dream’ on the other hand was ranked at #13 going into the fight against ‘The Joker’. A win against a top 5 opponent is impressive, add to that he took the fight on short notice and it makes it even more impressive.

Marvin Vettori stepped up on short notice and seized his moment

Marvin Vettori took on a tough challenge in Hermansson. However, he rose to the occasion and dug deep to secure a unanimous decision win over five hard-fought rounds. Following his win over Hermansson, John Anik asked Vettori if he had an opponent in mind. He replied, “Let’s go Borrachinha, we’re going to make a hell of a f***ing fight. Let’s go baby!”

Early on in the first round, ‘The Italian Dream’ had Hermansson badly hurt when he dropped him to the floor with a punch. He then dominated the rest of the first round on top and arguably won the first round 10-8.

However, Hermansson rallied on in the latter rounds to stage a strong comeback, but Vettori had done enough according to the judges to secure a unanimous decision win.

In the fight, the Italian-born fighter threw a mind-boggling 202 total strike with an accuracy of 54%. He also landed 164 significant strikes with an accuracy of 49%. 

Hermansson was not as effective and threw 139 total strikes with an accuracy of 38% and 122 significant strikes with an accuracy of 35%.

With a win, Vettori now puts himself in a prime position for a top 10 rank in the division. He called out Paulo Costa, who succumbed to a stoppage loss against the champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 253. A match between the two would be epic, and MMA fans will hope the UFC can make this fight happen.
