The 3rd One Day International between India and Australia, at Ranchi witnessed yet another MS Dhoni special. The former India captain was part of a spectacular runout and managed to dismiss an on-song Glenn Maxwell.

Aaron Finch, who was playing brilliantly, became the first victim of the Indian bowling attack. Then, there was a surge in scoring rate as Maxwell picked up where Finch left off. A now worried India needed something out of the ordinary to get him out and fast. Given his fine form during this tour of India, a 350+ was looking more and more likely. All the while, Maxwell was hitting Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja out of the park every over.

The big break for the hosts came when Shaun Marsh hit a short of length delivery off Kuldeep. The ball raced hard to Jadeja, standing at the edge of the 30-yard circle. He dived to his right and stopped a certain boundary after which he quickly released it to Dhoni who, standing clearly in front of the wickets, which has been one of the many changes he has brought to the game, flicked it on to the stumps

There was confusion about whether his hand hit the wickets before the ball, but that ambiguity was immediately eliminated on screen as the third umpire reconfirmed that Maxwell was out.

This is not something new for Dhoni, who has redefined “collecting the ball early” and just proves how his unconventional style brings about the edge that his peers lack. The timely dismissal of Maxwell led to a flurry of wickets and restricted Australia to 313.
