On the way to a match winning innings of 78 not out in the third ODI against West Indies, MS Dhoni went on to break several records. MS Dhoni is now the fourth highest run scorer for India in ODIs as he went past Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 9378 ODI runs. Dhoni now trails Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid who is third on the all-time top scorers for India in ODIs with 10889 runs. He is now placed himself at second spot on the list of highest run getters in ODIs by wicketkeepers. He overtook Adam Gilchrist who had scored 9410 runs in ODIs. Dhoni’s score tally reads 9442 runs in ODIs after the third ODI.

The Australian wicket keeper took to social media to congratulate MS by sharing a picture of an IPL match when he was captain of KXIP with a caption saying, “Congrats on passing me young fella. Was always a matter of time”. Dhoni is only behind Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara on the list of highest run scorers as wicket keepers who has 13341 ODI runs to his name. MS Dhoni reached the 9000-run mark in October 2016 and was the fastest wicket keeper to achieve the feat in terms of number of innings.
