Naomi Osaka might not be the favorite for the title this year, but she has been moving quietly under the radar at the Australian Open 2019. The young Japanese, who won her maiden slam at the US open last year, is known for giving out awkward and weird interviews occasionally.

In her recent press conference at the Australian open, Naomi Osaka spoke about how Kei Nishikori’s long match against Ivo Karlovic, irritated her. She was caught commenting something towards Kei Nishikori as they crossed paths with each other and was asked about it during her press conference, after her straight sets victory in her second round.

“Mr. Nishikori…(laughing)…Umm.. yeah I mean I told him nice match and…he looked very tired”, said Naomi Osaka as she couldn’t help but start giggling again. “So  I was just like- ‘Oh excuse me, I’ll get out of your way'”, said Osaka. “And he had a very very long match- I had to warm up 4 times… so thank you for that”, said the young Japanese.

Naomi Osaka also revealed that she was not the kind of person that is used to hugging anyone, adding to her already existing social awkwardness. Osaka was asked, during her press conference, if she preferred a hug or a handshake at the net after each match.

“The thing is, I’m used to handshakes so every time someone comes for a hug, I’m very confused”, said Naomi Osaka. “And I’m told that I give out the worst hugs too”, she added. “So its not necessarily the best situation for me to try to hug someone unless I really know them- and I don’t know really know anybody”, said Naomi Osaka with a chuckle.

Naomi Osaka will face the Taiwanese player Hsieh Su-wei in her next match. Hsieh Su-wei, caused the upset of the year when she beat Simona Halep at the Wimbledon Championships.
