NASCAR recently posted a message for their fans and their audience that they too are proudly celebrating Pride Month. However, along with that, there was a subtle, if not a cryptic, “acknowledgment” that was open to being interpreted in many ways.
“As we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, we acknowledge that recent actions have not aligned with NASCAR’s mission to be a welcoming sport for all,” NASCAR’s official handle tweeted.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to create a more inclusive environment — in our workplaces, at the race track & in the stands.”

But regardless of the subtle cryptic message, this tweet led to a flood of reactions from the fans at both ends. But it was the reactions that celebrated the fact that NASCAR is celebrating all parts of the society and trying to appeal not to a niche, but to the masses, were what resonated with what’s right.
Or as journalist Jeff Gluck emphasized, “Racing belongs to everyone.”
This isn’t a political take or a “woke” statement. NASCAR is trying to create a more welcoming environment for people from every walk of life. Racing belongs to everyone. https://t.co/dClYz3zCgR

I remember being 15 and thinking, I can’t be openly gay in the NASCAR community; if I was 15 now I could easily believe otherwise with not only recognition but seeing what the community has done with @GayRacingPod and pride paint schemes. It makes my heart full. Thank you, NASCAR

Truly wonderful. Most NASCAR fans are going to feel more accepted in such a welcoming and diverse environment. – Dr. Saad (He/They/There/Their) [Also retweeted]

All I've ever wanted throughout my life and career is to share my favorite sport with literally everyone. It's the foundation of why I do the job.
To that end, I'm an ally and a friend, today, this month and forever. I've got y'alls back at the track and away from it.

NASCAR is trying to reposition and diversify itself
It’s no secret or surprise either that NASCAR is trying to recreate itself and, more importantly, redefine what it stands for. Over the last few years, and particularly this year, the sport has doubled down on its attempt to appeal to a newer, more diverse audience.
“What NASCAR did to speak about ways to make the sport more inclusive sent a clear message to people, including those who might not be current fans of the sport,” Steve Lauletta, the president of the 23XI Racing team had said.

Having said that, NASCAR isn’t trying to be “a social justice organization” either, as Brandon Thompson, NASCAR’s Vice President for diversity and inclusion, emphasized.
“What’s most important about any diversity, equity and inclusion effort is that it’s authentic. It’s got to have depth, it’s got to have substance, and that’s what we’re looking to do,” he added.
