Ty Gibbs didn’t do himself any favors when he decided to punch Sam Mayer after a race while he himself had his helmet on. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver, who already had some brewing angst against him in the NASCAR community, found himself as a certified antagonist after the race in Martinsville.

However, his father, Coy Gibbs, recently defended his son and insisted that he’s been raised well, raised strong, and raised as a good human being.

“Look, that’s my son. So I have his back, 24×7, 365 days a year. Our conversations are private. We’re a pretty tough family. We raise our children tough,” he said. “I’m proud of him as a human, and I think he’s a talented driver.”

Now, having said that, Gibbs’ response or defense of his son wasn’t taken well by NASCAR fans. In fact, one could even argue that the words Gibbs used for his son, more or less backfired.

At least that’s what the reactions suggest.

Ty Gibbs “snapped” at Sam Mayer after the race

In his own defense, Ty Gibbs described what went through his mind right after the race at Martinsville, a race he thought he was certainly winning if not for the late-race move by the JR Motorsports driver.

“I talked to Sam, I was frustrated. I was like, ‘What are you doing?,’ when we got drove in the fence. We were kind of shoved a little bit and I turned away. When I got grabbed and kind of pulled, that just led up to that moment,” he said.

“It just built up, built up, built up and I snapped and that’s just part of it. Hopefully, I learn from it.”
