Speaking in a recent interview, NASCAR President Steve Phelps made a big revelation about what the schedule will look like in the future. In the last year or two, the sport has been dabbling into several new territories when it comes to the type of tracks it races on.

And it seems this ‘tradition’ is about to continue into the future as well.

This is because the Next Gen cars racing on a street course circuit is a real possibility now. “That’s something that we’re exploring. It’s hard to say at this point, I personally think having a street course on the schedule will be a good thing,” Phelps said.

“Where it is? What it is? Remains to be seen.”

“I think it will be a part of our future, I really do,” the President continued. “There are some traditionalists that probably don’t like that but with 36 points-paying races and two exhibitions, I think there’s room on the schedule for a street course.”

In the same interview, Steve Phelps addressed the state of trying to find more short tracks and reaching the saturation point with the abundance of road courses on the schedule.

While Phelps didn’t give a concrete idea of what the situation will really look like, he did give a hint of how the calendar will look in the future, having mentioned the “difficult” nature of finding one type of racetrack.

“I think we’re getting to a point where we may have some saturation on the road course side of things,” he said. “The short track thing has been difficult.”

Phelps added that they’ll “continue to listen to fans” and consider what they are interested in seeing.
