In a spot of bad news, ex-NASCAR driver Morgan Shepherd has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. As per the Shepherd Racing Venture’s website, the 79-year-old driver is in the early stages of the disease. In his heyday, the former driver recorded a career-best finish of fifth in the 1990 Cup Series championship.

In light of this SRV driver, Landon Cassill spoke about the team founder’s health. The 31-year old revealed that he spoke to Shepherd before the diagnosis and the man was in fairly high spirits. To make matters even better, the former driver is not about to let the disease get to him and he cannot wait to get back to the track soon.

Despite his age, Shepherd is still pretty spry and last raced in NASCAR, in 2019. To be precise, he participated in a handful of Xfinity events. It is truly incredible and inspiring to see that the man is still determined to continue racing.

Morgan Shepherd: A look back at his NASCAR career

Although Shepherd never quite got close to a Cup Series title, he still boasts of four Cup wins in his career. In 1990, he recorded a career-best finish of fifth place in the championship and even won the season finale at Atlanta.

However, he pretty much thrived in all three series, making a combined 1,027 starts since 1970. This places him seventh on the all-time NASCAR list of most starts. It is also worth mentioning that Morgan Shepherd amassed 15 wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The funny thing is, that three of his four wins came at Atlanta, with the fourth one at Martinsville.

Unfortunately, he does not have any wins in the Truck Series, and it seems unlikely that he will at that to his belt. That last time he competed in the Truck Series was back in 2015 at his favorite track, Atlanta.
