The American sports culture has changed drastically over the years. Especially if we look at the progress made in the last decade, it’s remarkable what has been achieved. Now sports are lucrative even if one is not playing in the NBA or other top leagues. Among some elite young athletes benefitting from this, is the son of LeBron James, Bronny James.

Bronny recently turned 19 and his birthday was marked by some heartwarming messages pouring in from his family. On the professional side of things, King James’ heir has been extremely successful. So, let’s take a look at his father’s career and his standing at the same age as Bronny.

LeBron has had one of the most successful careers in the NBA. The numerous records under his name, a long-standing career of 20+ years, and an enviable network, King James has had it all. Coming straight out of high school to join the league in 2003, LeBron managed to forever remain a “kid from Ohio”.

The King of Akron was 1st overall pick in the NBA draft in 2003, the same age as Bronny is right now, 19. The Cleveland Cavaliers rookie was making all the right noise in the basketball world. But was he making enough money as his son?

He was making $4,018,290 as a rookie with the Cavs. Although that’s a lot of money for a 19-year-old, LeBron’s earnings fall short of his son’s. NIL has managed to change the monetary aspect of college and high school athletes. NIL stands for name, image, and likeness, and NCAA accepted it in 2021. Since then, college and high school athletes have been able to monetize their earnings, even as amateur or semi-professional athletes. Thanks to NIL, Bronny James now has a net worth of over $5.9 million. Fairly above the kind of salary his father was making as a rookie.

Bronny is the highest-paid athlete in NIL valuation. On top of that, he is also the most followed on social media with 13.5 million combined followers.

Could LeBron James live his dream before retirement?

It is well-known in the hoop community that the LA Lakers superstar wants to play alongside his son. King James has, time and again, expressed his wish. With Bronny starting his college career at USC, LeBron has inched closer to his dream. However, the King is now entering into his 21st season with the NBA as a 38-year-old. Although there is no questioning his dedication as an athlete, his age does beg the question, how much longer can he continue playing at a high level?
