The contemporary NBA offense is all about three point shooting. Players work relentlessly to master their shot from beyond the arc to be effective in the league. However, there is only one undisputed king of three point shooting, Golden State Warriors? star guard, Stephen Curry.?

When the three point contest comes up during the All Star Weekend, it most certainly brings a lot of excitement among fans. Several excellent shooters have participated in the contest. With Curry and Tyrese Haliburton having a terrific record of scoring 31 in the contest, it seemed like a herculean task to beat that. However, Sabrina Ionescu scored an unbelievable total that even got Curry’s approval.

The three point contest has always been an exciting affair. With the best shooters in the league participating, it never fails to put up a show for the fans. Stephen Curry made it look easy when he racked up 31 points in the three point contest in 2021. Tyrese Haliburton then stunned the NBA world by tying Curry’s record in 2023. However, this year’s WNBA All Star Weekend delivered the ultimate surprise.

The WNBA All Star Weekend kicked off in Las Vegas on Friday with a bang. Beginning with the skills challenge, the All Star Weekend eventually led to the much anticipated three point contest. Sabrina Ionescu was making her first ever appearance in the three point contest. After losing the skills challenge to the Aces duo of Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray, she was looking for some redemption.

Starting off the far corner rack with a miss, Ionescu went onto make the next 20 shots back to back. She ended up knocking down 25 of her 27 shots in the contest. The New York Liberty guard racked up an unbelievable 37 points in the final round of the contest, shattering Haliburton and Curry’s record.?

The 25 year old’s historic achievement made the NBA fans’ jaws drop. The all-time leader in three pointers made Curry himself took to Twitter to share his excitement.

In the tweet, Curry wrote “RIDICULOUS!” in response to a video of Ionescu’s performance. It certainly was high praise coming from the best of the best. Ionescu put up a historic performance in the contest but this is not the first time she showed her shooting prowess.

Heading into the All Star Weekend, the New York Liberty stood comfortably as the top seed in the Eastern Conference. With Breanna Stewart having yet another incredible season, it was no surprise that the Liberty were doing so well. However, if not for Sabrina Ionescu’s extraordinary services as the point guard, the team may not have been so successful.

Ionescu has had another spectacular season, averaging 16.4 PPG and 5.8 RPG. She has also put up a career high in three point shooting percentage, shooting 46% from beyond the arc.

The former No.1 pick also earned a selection to the All Star Game as a reserve. This makes her second consecutive selection to the All Star Game. She was also selected to the All WNBA Second Team in 2022. She will now step on the court representing Team Stewart in the 2023 All Star Game.
