Experiencing the thrill of old games and rivalries through documentaries is undeniably on the rise. Such is the HBO series ‘Winning Time’, inspired by the incredible legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers. However, it does not precisely follow the Lakers’ history. While a lot of hype was created around the show, it gained equal criticism after its release as well. Though one of the members of the Lakers organization has praised the show, others went on to disregard it. One of them was the front-man of Showtime; Magic Johnson.

After two seasons, the series was canceled, and Johnson shared his opinion about the show.

Recently, the legend and his wife attended the Elizabeth Taylor Ball. The legend was honored with an award for his efforts in raising awareness for HIV/ AIDS. During the interview, he was asked about his opinion on the cancellation of the show. To the Hollywood Reporter’s question, he replied, “Well, I never watched it because nobody in this world can tell the Lakers story, The Showtime story? Nobody!

Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson added, “Dr. Buss was way ahead of his time as an owner. Our team? Unbelievable! The Laker girls with Paula Abdul? Unbelievable! Nobody can tell that story.”

Moreover, he added that he had nothing to do with the show since it was fictional. The 5x champion is not the only one.

Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and other stars questioned the accuracy of the show. Moreover, it was criticized for showing some characters in poor light. The Logo, Jerry West, went so far as to allege that the show tarnished his reputation.

Recently, the daughter of Dr. Jerry Buss appeared for an interview with the Athletic.

During the conversation, Jeanie revealed that the show was great and touched on several important points. She particularly liked the characters of the story.

Speaking of her favorite part of the show, she said“And like to hear someone say Jeanie pie. Like I haven’t heard anyone say that since my dad was alive. That’s what he called me, Jeanie pie, to hear that on television it’s just so strange.”
