Ben Shapiro looked wide-eyed and maybe a little taken aback when Shaquille O’Neal told a story about his parenting approach during a YouTube Shorts. In a lighthearted account, O’Neal described how he encourages his kids to do well in school by establishing high expectations and offering lavish presents in exchange for achieving success. Shapiro, who is well-known for his conservative viewpoints on money management, was entertained and a little surprised by O’Neal’s strategy, which combined comedy with extravagant spending.

The Youtube handle of “BenShapiro” shared insights and during a conversation, Shaquille O’Neal stated, “My kids are gated community gangsters.  They kinda got mad at this, but I say, in order to touch Daddy’s cheese, you gotta have three degrees. ‘Cause I believe in respectable nepotism. And I also have to teach them we’re not rich. I’m rich.” He continued, “You know, my oldest son, I said, ‘My man, if you get all A’s this next semester, you can get whatever you want.’ So he gets all A’s, and I get a call from Tesla. I said, ‘Man, you better take your a** it across the street to Honda’.”

Noticing the $500 million man’s children decision, Ben Shapiro commented, “That’s it, that’s it. I like that perspective on wealth. That’s good. I’m rich. You’re not rich. I like that, that’s good.”

Insisting that his kids “have three degrees” before they can access his fortune and making cracks about “respectable nepotism” offer a hilarious yet insightful look into O’Neal’s parenting approach. His method questions accepted ideas about privilege and inheritance, arguing that material gains should be acquired via diligence and academic success as opposed to being inherited. Though more in a lighter way, this attitude is in line with Shapiro’s beliefs on meritocracy and personal accountability.
