Big Diesel is giving everyone a curious case of déjà vu. The commercial powerhouse that he is, Shaquille O’Neal dropped his newest ad with Epson. Their partnership goes way back. But the latest commercial for the Epson EpiqVision mini projector left a few scratching their heads. Some might think they traveled back in time to 2021 too. What sorcery has the big man pulled this time?

Shaq is such an ad-churning machine, that he could give fans Frequency Illusion Syndrome in one TV spot. But a commercial only gets better with the big man’s big wit.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star unveiled the new commercial for the mini projector on his social media. “Who doesn’t want a life-size mega picture up to 150? Sign me up for the Epson EpiqVision® Mini EF12. #ad #epson,” he wrote.

The Epson EpiqVision mini projector takes TV viewing to a whole other level. The only way to convey that is to have the larger-than-life Shaquille O’Neal endorse it. Shaq’s partnership with Epson goes back to 2019. The $5 billion global company fed O’Neal’s enthusiasm for tech and innovation, like the mini projector.

The actual commercial had a few asking if they’d seen it before. Not uncommon for brands to rework old commercials for upgraded versions of their products. Epson too upcycled their 2021 commercial with Big Diesel.

The 2021 ‘Shaqmonial’ is a game of ‘Spot the difference’ with the 2023 ad. Other than the minor differences in the projector itself and the dialogues, it’s the same big fella in his blue sweater. In one cut, Shaq’s watching an NBA game on the screen but a different visual in the 2023 one. His exaggerated awe-filled head-turn at the display quality is still the classic Shaq.

The punchline has been altered a tad. This time he’s poking fun at the ‘humble’ 75-inch TV. Another slightly different ad for the projector also exists. He’s similarly geeked out over the Epson printer too. His FastFoto ad campaign included his mom, Lucille, as well. Mama Diesel was involved in Shaq’s biggest commercial venture yet.

Shaq’s mom inspired new career

There’s a reason Shaquille O’Neal is in every second commercial. He’s that memorable. He put some of that quality into Icy Hot’s latest ad campaign. O’Neal has been a partner with the pain relief brand since his NBA career. When they launched a product line for kids, he got involved in a big way.

Inspired by his mom calling him a “Big Kid, the 51-year-old directed a series of commercials starring himself. This time he hilariously made himself into a talking bobblehead to be one of the kids. As usual, he left fans in stitches with his humor.

One take at a time

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
