Born on September 26th, 1946, in Alexandria, Virginia, Carol ‘Mickie’ Marsh started her journey as an air hostess. She ran into Mike on a flight, and as fate would have it, this encounter paved the way for their eternal union. In 1969, on the day of his graduation from West Point, New York’s military academy, they said “I do” in a modest Catholic chapel there. They renewed their vows in 2004 at Duke Chapel on the occasion of their 35th wedding anniversary, reaffirming their everlasting love.

After graduating from the United States Military Academy, where he also played basketball, Coach K took on the role of the head coach at Duke University in 1980. This was the beginning of Coach K’s coaching career. Mickie was a tower of strength throughout his successful career, bearing witness to crucial occasions such as his historic accomplishment in 2015. This was when he became the first coach in history to win 1,000 NCAA Division I basketball games.

Mickie, though, had an important role that went beyond the sideline. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, in 1994–1995 she convinced her husband to step down after a trying season due to a back injury. On what would turn out to be his final day of coaching that season, Mickie offered him an ultimatum. He had to put his health before practice if he wanted to return home. He briefly stepped down for twelve games before returning to add a plethora of wins to his legacy.

Off the court, the Krzyzewski family has experienced its fair share of successes as well. Debbie Savarino, Lindy Frasher, and Jamie Spatola, the couple’s three daughters, have all left their mark in their respective careers. Two of their daughters, Debbie and Lindy, have remained close to Duke University. Lindy works as a staff counselor for the basketball team and contributes to the university’s athletic activities. Meanwhile, Debbie supports the student-athletes in her role as assistant director of athletics. The third daughter, Jamie, is a successful author who graduated from Duke with a major in English. Jamie sat along with her father to pen down the book “Beyond Basketball” in 2006.

However, following much careful consideration, Coach K finally made a life-changing decision in 2021.
