The world seems different to UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma as he has now become the third NCAA Division I coach to have 1200 career wins. More so, he did it the fastest. The celebratory wave continues among the Huskies as their recent Instagram post praises Geno Auriemma with a 1,200 winning digit. The shared post has been captioned – “Just the third to 1,200 wins and he did it the fastest. There’s only one Geno Auriemma.”

Now that Geno has achieved the 1200th career win mark, he has joined former Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) who previously held the record with 1202 wins, and Stanford Cardinals’ women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer who recently surpassed Coach K with 1206 and became the winningest coach of all-time in NCAA Division I basketball history (both men’s and women’s).

This significant win is hence a result of the Huskies’ tireless efforts and efficient skills employed on the court. They won their 21st straight win against their Big East opponents.

Despite the new feat, what exactly Auriemma’s path will look like as he moves forward.

Geno entering a tight race ahead

As he has surpassed the career-defining milestone of registering 1000+ wins, it is safe to say that Geno will surpass Coach K’s record in the future. If so, then he will certainly be in a tight race with VanDerveer for the rest of their careers to achieve the all-time mark.

Notably, Tara VanDerveer has now won 1206 games as of Wednesday. On the other hand, Auriemma has hit the 1200-win mark in a shorter period than VanDerveer and he has dropped over 100 games than she has in her career.
