6-2! After losing to Texas A&M, Brian Kelly and his squad are looking to bounce back. This Saturday they will face Alabama. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is going to play a crucial role in the highly anticipated game and can be one of the biggest challenges for Alabama’s defense. Garrett grew up in a football family and he was exposed to the sport from an early age, which has played a huge role in pursuing his career as a footballer. But how is he connected to Alabama?

Garrett’s father, Doug Nussmeier, is a former NFL player and coach who has deep ties to the football world. Michael Casagrande, a senior reporter, shared a tweet that answers our question: “The LSU QB is the son of former Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier.” The quarterback was born in Louisiana but spent part of his early years living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which makes the next game more interesting. His father played college football at the University of Idaho and later spent his years coaching in various football programs like Michigan State, Washington, and Florida. This season, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles as a quarterbacks coach.

Moving on, according to Pro Football Focus, Nussmeier has thrown 19 out of 20 touchdown passes when he is not under pressure, but when he has pressure to perform, he has thrown just one. Week by week, the season is heating up, and every single game is important to getting one step closer to the playoffs. However, in the recent game against Texas A&M, Nussmeier had his worst performance of the season. He completed 25 out of 50 passes and threw three interceptions. Will he work on the game plan and come back stronger against Tide?

LSU has lost two games, and we are not sure about their playoff seat; however, the quarterback has held the national trophy in the past. Yes! When Alabama beat Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame in 2012 when his father was OC for the Tide. It sounds funny, right? The Advocate’s writer, Wilson Alexander, shared Kelly’s statement on the same, “I told him not to bring it up again,” Kelly joked. “Next time we’re on that field together, we’re going to be holding it together.” This season, the Tide are playing under a new head coach. It will be interesting to see who Doug supports—his former team or his son.

Garrett Nussmeier reflects on costly mistakes against Texas A&M

“I got to play better,” Nussmeier said after a tough loss against Texas A&M. The three interceptions have raised many questions about his starting position. Tigers had a 17-7 lead, but what went wrong? Though Nussmeier’s performance was not good enough, head coach Brian Kelly still stood by his QB and defended the junior. He mentioned that LSU’s offense needs to do more and help Nussmeier.

The quarterback acknowledged Kelly’s support. Talking about his leadership prior to the season, he said, “I’ve embraced it… I love it. I’ve been waiting for it my whole life. The way you take control of the leadership of a team is by your play.” Alabama vs. LSU is a do-or-die game for both teams. LSU and HC cannot afford another poor performance at the QB position.
