After a remarkable 18-season run with the Green Bay Packers, 15 of which he led as the starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers embarked on a new journey with the New York Jets last year. This move mirrored the path taken by Brett Favre, Rodgers’ legendary predecessor, who also found his way to the Jets. During a heartfelt stroll down memory lane on Cameron Hanes’ podcast – Keep Hammering Collective, Rodgers reflected on his early days as a backup with his first NFL team, Green Bay.

Starting as a backup, he didn’t let his initial role dim his shine. Instead, he demonstrated the qualities that would pave the way for his illustrious future as a quarterback. Delving into the essence of leadership, Rodgers shared how he had to invest in relationships with the team and connect with the players initially. This helped him create personal connections with each of them. Aaron said, “… There’s something special about that personal connection you can have with people and it’s finding ways to connect… You show them that you’re invested in their life and then in turn, they return that trust and love and affection and they’ll listen to you. They’ll follow you and as a leader that’s what you need. You need your guys to be all pulling the same direction so how do you do that you got to invest in the relationships.”

A-Rod used to inspire the locker room even though he himself was a backup and didn’t get too many chances to play. It was a delicate dance when Aaron was not the starter, he had to make sure he was not trying to step on the starter’s shoes, but he was trying to put himself in that position so that when his time arrived the team knew what he was all about. He just had to wait four games as a backup. The QB further said, “So for me when I was backup in Green Bay my whole life was a scout team. So I inspired the hell out of those guys. I said let’s go out and dominate.”

He also mentioned how he would dangle real-life rewards in front of them and make them visualize their future if they gave it their all during team practice sessions. “You’re going to get elevated. You are going to be on the roster. You’re going to be playing the games.”

Aaron Rodgers parted ways with Green Bay collecting four NFL MVP awards, ten Pro Bowl selections, and a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s. During his stint with them, he led the team to greatness.

Rodger’s role in the Packers’ rivalry redemption

The Packers’ domination over their rivals owes much to the Favre-Rodgers quarterback saga. It spanned nearly a quarter of a century. When Favre set foot in Green Bay back in ’92, the Bears were leading the rivalry by a wide margin. Fast forward, and the Packers flipped the script, leading 105-95-6 when Rodgers left. Rodgers’ winning streak in his final eight games against Chicago gave them the edge.

His greatest “Bears” moment came in 2021 at Soldier Field with his unforgettable taunt, “I still own you!” during a 24-14 victory. Rodgers’ last dance with the Bears on December 4, 2022, was historic; both teams were neck-and-neck with 786 all-time wins. But with a 28-19 victory, the Packers clinched the record, a title the Bears had held since 1921.

His other great moment came in Arizona. Down 20-13 with just 50 seconds on the clock and a daunting fourth-and-20 ahead, Rodgers launched the first of his miraculous maneuvers. He connected with Jeff Janis for a 60-yard marvel. The magic didn’t stop there; with merely 4 seconds left, Rodgers and Janis teamed up again for a 41-yard Hail Mary touchdown, pushing the game into overtime.
