The Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry has accomplished a lot on the football field. His name will forever be written in the history books. However, Henry’s starting in life was far from the glamour and glitz of professional football.

Henry was born to Derrick Henry Sr. and Stacy Veal in 1994 in the state of Florida. However, he did not spend much of his childhood with his parents. His parents had their issues to take care of and Henry was shipped away from them at just 4 months old! But what role his parents have played in his life?

Derrick Henry thrived with his grandma

Henry Sr. and Stacy were very young when they had their son, 15 and 16 respectively. They could not take care of him on their own and, hence, Henry was sent to live with his paternal grandparents. Henry Sr. had numerous run-ins with the law as well. He has been arrested 20 times, the first such incident happening when Henry Jr. was not even 2 years old.

The Heisman Trophy winner grew up around his uncles and aunts in rural Florida. He did not form a relationship with his parents until much later in life.

It was his grandma Gladys that Derrick had a close connection with. She supported the young Derrick in his football aspirations, along with the grandfather. But later in life, Derrick and his parents reignited their relationship and are a force of joy in his life!

Derrick’s mother became his mental support during his college days. Derrick was trying to switch colleges from Alabama. But his mother not only insist on him staying. But also, talked to the football team’s coach, to make him achieve his potential.

Stacy is now a hemodialysis technician and loves to watch his son play football. Despite not spending much time with his father while growing up. The Henry duo has formed a close relationship.

Henry Sr. makes and sells customized barbecue grills, but makes sure not to miss any of his son’s games. And has left his legal troubles behind him!
